Solarium installation in Ontario, CA - a bright room that stays comfortable

Want the light of a glass room without a hot box in August? We build solariums that stay dry and get used all year.

What goes into building a solarium in Ontario?

A solarium installation in Ontario, CA gives you a fully enclosed room that's heated and cooled and has all weather windows, so you get the light of a glass room and can still use it in July and January.

Most people who call us have a patio or deck that gets used a few months a year and a house that's short a room. The first decision is whether you want a heated and cooled room for year-round use or something simpler, and that choice, along with the size, what the room sits on and the roof and glass you pick, moves the price more than anything else. The schedule mostly turns on the city's plan review and on whether the base needs work before we can build, and your own figure comes from the written quote I send after the visit.

How we build a solarium

Every solarium starts on paper, because a room that's mostly glass gets hot and the fix belongs in the first drawing. We plan shade and roof vents there, and we talk through a solid roof against a glass one, which trades a little light for a lot of comfort. I steer most people toward the solid roof, since nobody sits in a room they can't stand by 2 p.m. Then we fix the base if it needs it, set footings where they're needed, frame the walls and roof, put in the floor, glass and roofing, and run the wiring and heating and cooling. The joint where the room meets your house gets flashing, the metal that steers water off that seam, and I'd rather spend an extra hour there than have you find a leak in the first big rain.

Some people come in asking for a solarium and leave with a different plan, and that's fine. Our sunroom design work is where we settle size, glass and roof before you spend on materials. If what you really want is shade over the patio, patio cover installation gets you that with no walls to build.

What changes a solarium installation in Ontario

When a solarium needs a permit, the plans go to the City of Ontario Building Department, which takes them only electronically through its online portal and accepts no paper sets. We prepare the plans, file them and schedule the inspections, so you don't have to learn the portal on a Saturday. How you'll use the room matters just as much. Under state energy guidance, the building official may require a sunspace to be heated or cooled if it looks like living space, and then the state Energy Code applies to it. A room with no heating or cooling, kept apart from the house by a barrier that stops air and heat, skips the code's rules for heating equipment and for walls, windows and insulation, though it still has to meet the lighting rules. Decide early, because adding heating or cooling to that room later counts as an addition under the code.

The other thing we watch here is the base. A lot of patio slabs around Ontario were poured for a table and a grill, not walls, glass and a roof, so I check the slab before anything gets drawn. We see the same slabs on jobs in Chino and Upland.

How solarium installation works

  1. Call or send the form

Tell us how you'd use the room, its rough size and whether you want heating and cooling. I'll set a time to come out.

  2. I measure and check the base

I measure, look at the slab, deck or patio cover the room would sit on, and ask how you'll use it. You get a written quote that spells out what's included, so you can see where the money goes before you decide.

  3. We file plans with the city

Once you sign, we handle the plans and permits with the city. The city says a first plan review takes about five weeks and a later review about four, so we plan the start around that and keep you posted while it runs.

  4. We build and walk it

Our own crew builds the room. When it's done, we walk it with you and open every window and vent together.

Questions before you book a solarium

What is the difference between a solarium and a three season room?

A solarium is fully enclosed, heated and cooled, with all weather windows, while a three season room generally has no heating or cooling and uses uninsulated windows or screens. Enclosed patios fall in that simpler group too. If you want to sit in it in August and in January, I'd go with the solarium.

How much does a solarium cost near Ontario, CA?

A sunroom in the Riverside area usually costs about $17,000 to $120,000 per project, and larger rooms that need a foundation and have heating and air conditioning fall at the high end. That's what the market around here runs, not our price. Your own number comes from the written quote after I've seen the site.

Should I insulate a solarium when it's built or add it later?

Insulate it when it's built. Highly insulated windows and insulation in the walls, floor and roof make the room more energy efficient, and they're much easier to put in during construction. Adding them later can often cost more, because walls and ceilings have to come back open.

How do I keep a solarium cool in summer?

Shade it and vent it. UK design guidance says sunspaces easily overheat in summer, and that shade from a roof overhang or louvers, along with roof vents that open, fixes it. That's why both go on our first drawing instead of getting added after the first heat wave.

How do I maintain a solarium?

Check the roof and gutters once a year, clean the door and window tracks, and keep the weep holes in the frame clear so water can drain out. That comes from one sunroom company's guide, which also suggests a pure silicone spray on doors and windows, since oil-based lubricants attract dirt.

What license does a contractor need to build a solarium in California?

Two classes from the Contractors State License Board cover this kind of work. The B General Building class covers structures that shelter people or property and take at least two unrelated trades, and the C-17 Glazing class covers installing glass and glazed frames, panels, sashes and doors. Ask any contractor which class they hold before you sign.

Why Ontario homeowners call Sunhaven Ontario Sunrooms & Patios for a solarium

The owner comes out, not a salesperson, and I learned framing and glazing on commercial crews before I started this business. The person pricing your room knows where glass rooms leak.

  • In business since 2013

We've been building sunrooms and patio enclosures in Ontario and the cities around it for 13 years. Your room won't be the first glass room our crew has put up.

We're fully licensed and insured. That covers you and your house while the work is underway.

  • Straight answers on city review

On a solarium, what matters most is a room that stays dry and doesn't cook you by noon. Our work is backed by our satisfaction guarantee, and the first step is a visit, so tell us about your room.

  • Patio cover installation

If a full room is more than you need, a patio cover puts shade over the slab you already have.

  • Sunroom design

Help sorting out size, roof and glass on paper before you commit to a build.
