Can my patio become a room I'll actually use?

Patio enclosures in Ontario, CA turn the open slab or deck behind your house into a sunroom that sits on what's already there, so you get a real room without starting from bare dirt. At Sunhaven Ontario Sunrooms & Patios, it's one of the jobs we're known for.

Most people who call us have a patio they barely use because it's too hot by noon, dusty when the wind picks up or soaked after a rain. The price moves with the size of the room, whether your slab can carry it as is, the frame and glass you pick, and whether you want power or heating and cooling inside. The schedule turns mostly on whether your layout needs an engineer and how long city review runs. Your written quote spells out what's included, so you see where it lands before you sign anything.

How we build a patio enclosure

I start with your existing slab and how much roof each post will hold up, because that decides whether the slab can stay or needs help. If your layout goes past the city's standard patio design, I line up the engineering early, since the city will consider a different design when an engineer's analysis backs it, and finding that out late only stalls the job. Once the plan is set, our crew sets the posts and frame and closes the room in with glass or screen panels. We spend the extra hour where leaks start, at the base and the joint with your house, so the first big rain doesn't find a gap.

If the slab can't carry what you want, or you'd rather have a room built from the ground up, the job becomes sunroom construction on a new foundation. When your idea runs to odd angles or a room that wraps a corner, we design it as one of our custom sunrooms. And if all you really want is shade, a patio cover is the lighter build.

Patio enclosures in Ontario and what the city decides

Ontario has its own standard patio design, and the city decides whether your project can be built under it. I haven't seen an Ontario rule written just for walled or screened enclosures, so whether yours fits that plan or needs more is the city's call, and I don't guess at it. We prepare the plans, file them with the city and schedule the inspections. The city also says its standard design is used at your own risk, so it's fair to ask any installer who checks that the design suits your patio and your house. On our jobs, that's me, before anything gets drawn.

We're based in Ontario and work in the cities around it, and most patios we meet are concrete slabs poured when the house went up, often with a slope toward the yard and some wear at the edges. A sloped slab needs the base of the walls set level, or doors bind and water finds the low corner, and we see the same thing on jobs in Upland and Chino.

How a patio enclosure gets built

  1. Call or send the form

Call (909) 738-1566 or use the form, and we'll get back to you to set a time for me to come out. Weekday evenings and weekends are fine for the visit if that's easier for you.

  2. I measure and check the slab

I measure, look over the slab, deck or cover, and ask how you plan to use the room. Then I send a written quote that spells out what's included, so you know what you're paying for before you commit.

  3. We handle plans and permits

Once you sign, we draw the plans, file them with the city and schedule the inspections. City review takes time, so I tell you that up front and keep you posted while it runs.

  4. Our crew builds, we walk it

Our own crew builds the room from start to finish. When it's done, we walk through it with you so you see how the doors, windows and drainage work.

Questions before you book a patio enclosure

What is a patio enclosure?

A patio enclosure is a sunroom built over a deck or patio slab your house already has, so the open space becomes a room sitting on what's already in place. It's a different job from a full addition because we work with your existing base when it can carry the room.

Can my existing patio slab in Ontario hold an enclosure?

Under Ontario's standard patio design, an existing slab can serve as the foundation only when each post holds up no more than 40 square feet of roof. That's why I size the roof and space the posts around that limit, since adding a post is usually easier than replacing a slab.

How much does a patio enclosure cost in Ontario, CA?

The cost depends on the size of the room, whether your slab can carry it as is and what you put inside, so I give you a number after I've seen your patio. Engineering for a layout beyond the city's standard design, glass versus screens, and wiring or heating and cooling are what move it most. The written quote lists all of it.

What do I need for a patio permit in Ontario, CA?

For its standard patio design, the City of Ontario asks for two copies of a site plan, two copies of the city's form and a building permit application. We put that package together and file it for you.

How do I find out if my home is in a fire hazard zone?

Enter your address on the California State Fire Marshal's fire hazard zone map, and it shows where your property sits among the mapped Fire Hazard Severity Zones. It's a quick check worth doing early, when you start planning a new room, and you can tell me what it shows when I come out.

What is the best frame material for a patio enclosure?

No single material is required, and enclosures can be built from aluminum, vinyl, wood or other materials. For most patios around here I lean toward aluminum because it's strong for its weight and won't rot in our sun, but if you want the room to feel like part of the house, vinyl or wood is worth talking through at the estimate.

Why Ontario homeowners call Sunhaven for patio enclosures

  • I measure every job myself

I come out to measure and look over your patio, and I check the slab and post spacing against Ontario's standard patio design while I'm there. That way your quote is built on what your slab can carry, not a guess.

  • Our own crew does the building

Our own people build your room, and licensed electricians and heating and cooling trades come in only where the job calls for them. You deal with one outfit, and the crew sealing the joint with your house is ours.

  • In business since 2013

I started this business in 2013 after years on commercial framing and glazing crews putting up storefronts and office buildings. Thirteen years in, we still frame and glaze your patio the way those jobs taught me.

  • Fully licensed and insured

We're fully licensed and insured. That protects you and your house while our crew is working on your property.

On this job, the base and the joint with your house matter more than anything else, and every room we build is backed by our satisfaction guarantee. When you're ready, tell us about your patio and I'll set a time to come take a look.

  • Custom sunrooms

For a room with a shape, roof line or size that a standard enclosure layout won't cover.

  • Sunroom construction

When your slab can't carry the room, or you'd rather start on a new foundation built for it.
